AI in Security Operations 2026: Adoption, Challenges, and the Path Forward

Prophet Security’s State of AI in Security Operations 2026 report, based on a survey of over 250 cybersecurity professionals, reveals that AI has become mainstream in security operations. According to the report, 40% of security teams now use AI daily, 56% are testing it, and only 4% have no plans to adopt it. The survey highlights that security teams are overwhelmed by alerts, with an average of 100 alerts per day and larger organizations facing up to 1,000. Over a quarter of teams handle more than 500 alerts daily, yet many operate with fewer than ten analysts. This alert fatigue leads to 28% of alerts never being investigated, and 60% of respondents report that missed alerts have resulted in serious incidents like data breaches or downtime.

The report also notes that AI-driven attacks are on the rise, with 56% of security professionals observing an increase, particularly in finance and healthcare. Common threats include AI-written phishing emails, deepfake scams, credential stuffing, and AI-generated malware. In response, AI has become the top priority for security teams, surpassing traditional concerns like cloud and data security. Teams using AI report significant benefits: 72% say AI has cut investigation time by at least 25%, and many see improved 24/7 coverage and reduced false alarms.

However, building in-house AI tools is challenging; 46% of DIY projects were abandoned or replaced. Trust remains a hurdle, as 57% of teams require human review of every AI decision, and no respondent grants full autonomy. Privacy is the biggest concern, cited by 44% of teams, followed by explainability at 41%. Despite fears of job losses, 57% expect team sizes to remain the same, with roles shifting toward advanced tasks like threat hunting and incident response. The report concludes that successful AI adoption involves using AI to investigate all alerts, validating its work, gradually increasing autonomy, and using saved time for proactive threat hunting.
