Last Thursday, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare experienced a security breach which caused their IT system to be taken offline and all non-emergency procedures to be suspended. Emergency services were redirected to other hospitals, with only Level 1 traumas from TMH's immediate service area being accepted. The IT Department detected the issue quickly and shut down the system to limit the damage. They are currently reviewing each system and bringing them back online one-by-one, but there is no timeline for how long this will take. The attack was reported to law enforcement and the IT team is working with them on the investigation. To reduce the impact of the cyberattack, the employees followed the protocols for system downtime. Starting today, February 6th, TMH Physician Partners practices are back to seeing patients as scheduled. Sources with knowledge of the situation believe the hospital was targeted by a ransomware attack. The federal authorities had warned of ransomware groups targeting healthcare companies in the US last year, and this is the second suspected ransomware incident involving US hospitals in 2023. Last year, 25 attacks against health systems operating 290 hospitals were reported. The Atlantic General Hospital in Maryland was also the target of a ransomware attack last month.
