Meta has filed a patent application (US 2026/0182881) for an AI system that continuously listens to a user’s voice throughout the day, analyzes emotional state from tone, pace, and biometric signals, and creates a timestamped log of emotional readings tied to location, activity, and device usage. The patent, filed in December 2025 and published July 2, 2026, describes a system that can operate via smart glasses, phones, smartwatches, headphones, or smart home speakers. It transcribes speech and uses AI to detect mood from words and vocal cues, also incorporating eye-tracking (pupil size, blink rate, eye moisture) and device usage patterns. The system builds emotional profiles over time and can provide feedback like ‘You sigh most frequently before bed.’ A secondary feature is a real-time fitness coach that monitors form and adjusts encouragement based on perceived mood. The patent notes that no product is currently planned. The filing draws parallels to Amazon’s Halo wearable, which had a similar Tone feature that was discontinued in 2023. The EU’s AI Act, effective February 2025, bans AI emotion inference in workplaces and schools, with fines up to €35 million or 7% of global turnover. A separate EU rule in August 2026 will require disclosure for biometric emotion-reading systems. The Hacker News has contacted Meta for comment.
