OPSWAT, a provider of infrastructure protection, has released their new MetaDefender Kiosk K2100 hardware. This product is designed to give users the ability to use the company's media-scanning capabilities while on the go. The MetaDefender kiosks are intended to address a security issue with critical infrastructure that is protected by air gaps. To maintain, audit, or move data between these systems, removable media such as SD cards, USB sticks, and DVDs are used by field service personnel. This poses a potential risk, as the removable media could be used to transfer sensitive information away from the protected infrastructure. Pete Lund, VP of Products at OPSWAT, explains that this is especially concerning when third-party contractors are involved. The MetaDefender Kiosk line scans files on removable media using up to 30 different antivirus protection applications, as well as checking through binaries and executables for vendor and version info. It also utilizes content disarm and reconstruction technology to protect against zero-day attacks. This technology is designed to rebuild PDFs and Word documents to remove any code or macros that are not necessary. The primary customers for this product are in the manufacturing, chemical processing, energy, and oil industries, but it is applicable to any organization that has a geographically dispersed or outdoor component to their operations. It can also be used by those in the armed forces or military who are collecting digital evidence. The K2100 is now available for purchase from OPSWAT, with shipments expected to begin in the first quarter. It can be bought outright, with licensing fees for the AV engines and different capabilities, or as a subscription leasing model with an annual use fee.
