WhatsApp has officially announced the global rollout of username reservations, a new privacy feature designed to protect the phone numbers of its over three billion users. The optional feature allows users to connect on the platform using a unique username instead of sharing their phone number directly. Username reservations begin on June 29, 2026, with general availability expected later this year.
According to the Meta-owned messaging app, the username is a privacy feature, not a social media handle. There is no directory to browse or suggestions, so users must know the exact username to contact someone for the first time. WhatsApp will provide a username generator to help users choose a unique name. Additionally, users can set up a username key for an extra layer of protection, requiring anyone contacting them for the first time to know both the username and the key. The key can be reset at any time to cut off new inbound contact.
Content creators, small businesses, and organizations can claim their existing Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp to maintain a consistent online presence. Once enabled, other accounts can no longer view or access a user’s phone number. Users can reserve a username by navigating to Settings > Account > Username. The feature will roll out gradually over the coming months, with notifications when available in each country.
This development comes over two years after Signal introduced a similar username feature to shield phone numbers. The announcement highlights WhatsApp’s continued focus on privacy and user control.
