Not If, But When: The Need to Prepare for Adapting Threats

Security professionals today witness a constant evolution as threat actors continue to change their strategies to remain ahead of cybersecurity defenses. As the cyber threat landscape continues to evolve, it is imperative that companies understand the importance of data and cyber security strategies and maintain a state of resilience to respond to and adequately protect against the ever-changing threats they face. Cybersecurity professionals realize that they are unlikely to eliminate all cyber threats; however, they can make it difficult to be successful by understanding the ever-changing trends and vulnerabilities in the threat landscape. Organizations must maintain a state of readiness, beginning with having a strong security baseline. This safeguards the business-critical systems and data of a company against malicious activities and provides the necessary tools for security teams to directly respond to any incidents. Additionally, companies must invest in the latest technologies to create protection layers and threat detection methods to prevent cyberattacks. These layers should include network security, endpoint security, and secure remote access. Companies should also invest in proactive measures such as privacy and compliance, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning for automated threat detection and response. Since different companies have different risk profiles, it is essential for organizations to take into account the threat actors and their strategies to develop a customized defense that takes into consideration the type of security threat, its goals, and the means to conduct an attack. Cybersecurity teams must assess the threat and develop incident response plans to take quick action when these cyber incidents occur. Organizations should also create and implement a formal cybersecurity strategy that states the standard of protection expected and the steps required to get there. Therefore, having a team that is trained in various methods of cyber defense and incident response is essential, combined with a well-thought-out security hardening, vulnerability management, and patch management. The cyber threat landscape may perpetually change, but cybersecurity professionals have to be ready and prepared to identify and take the necessary steps to protect their businesses. Companies must not just depend on being prepared for the ‘if’ threat, but also develop robust cyber defense strategies with best practices to respond to the ‘when’. By taking a multi-layered approach to securing systems and data, regularly testing incident responses and processes, and updating security measures, organizations will be able to maintain the much-needed resilient state to handle the ever-evolving cyber threats.
