Two popular background check and verification services, Instant Checkmate and TruthFinder, owned by PeopleConnect, have recently been the victims of a data breach. Hackers have leaked the data of millions of users, which was stored in a 2019 backup database. This data was shared as two 2.9 GB CSV files on Breach Forums, a hacker and cybercrime forum. PeopleConnect has confirmed the incident and launched an investigation. They have collaborated with a third-party cybersecurity firm to find more details. The list that was leaked includes names, emails, telephone numbers, securely encrypted passwords, and expired and inactive password reset tokens. It appears to include all customer accounts created between 2011 and 2019. PeopleConnect has not yet determined if the incident was an accidental leak or if hackers stole the list, but there is no evidence of a network breach.
