Meta Group AG recently received a massive fine of €55 million from the European Union for failing to secure its data and avoid a data breach.
The EU-wide General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was introduced in May 2018 to help reduce the amount of data breaches around Europe.
Meta Group AG, a German-based non-profit organisation, failed to keep its data secure and subsequently had a data breach that exposed its customers personal information, including full names, email addresses, and passwords. The personal information of over 2 million people was affected.
Meta Group AG was fined €55 million for this data breach, which is one of the largest fines ever levied against an entity for violating the GDPR. This fine was significantly more than other organisations that have been fined for similar data breaches in the past.
The GDPR requires organisations to protect the data of their customers and comply with the regulations that were put in place to keep that data secure. The large fine serves as a warning to organisations that they must take the necessary steps to protect their customers’ data, or face large penalties.
The European Union has made it clear that it will not tolerate organisations that fail to protect the personal data of their customers, and this large fine is testimony to that.
