Facebook has always had a hard time staying ahead of bad actors seeking to exploit the platform.
The degree to which the company allegedly can't keep up is beyond disturbing.
According to an explosive report this week from The Wall Street Journal, Facebook is struggling to stop its own algorithms from enabling and even promoting the spread of child abuse content on its platforms.
According to tests run by the Journal and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, Facebook does indeed remove some hashtags related to pedophilia.
The company's system also sometimes recommends new ones with minor changes.
The company has also struggled to root out Facebook groups dedicated to this abuse.
Researchers are left stunned and confused at why the company has such a hard time detecting the content when they're easily able to find it.
"We often wonder, 'Why is it that we can, within minutes, find these massive networks?'" said Leanna McDonald, the president of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection.
"Why is no one over there dealing with this?".
For its part, Facebook touted its record at removing tens of thousands of these accounts while still admitting that it has work to do.
This is far too serious a subject to downplay, and it's clear the company must do something more dramatic to get a handle on the problem.
