Recent Windows Server 2025 updates cause Remote Desktop freezes

Microsoft says a known issue is causing Remote Desktop freezes on Windows Server 2025 systems after installing security updates released since the February 2025 Patch Tuesday. "After installing the February 2025 Security update (KB5051987), released February 11, 2025, and later updates, on Windows Server 2025 devices, you might experience Remote Desktop sessions freezing shortly after connection," the company said in a release health dashboard update. Microsoft also used Known Issue Rollback (KIR)—a Windows feature that reverses buggy non-security updates—to resolve similar Remote Desktop and RDS connection issues caused by Windows 11 24H2 updates released since January 2025. Veeam also revealed in a Tuesday advisory that Microsoft is helping investigate a known issue triggering connection errors on Windows 11 24H2 systems when restoring data from SMB network shares or Backup & Replication servers. Earlier this week, the company fixed another Windows issue causing some USB printers to start printing random text after installing updates released since late January 2025. This issue also affected Windows 11 24H2 systems, but Microsoft resolved it roughly two weeks later with the KB5052093 optional update released on February 25. While Windows Server 2025 devices aren't directly affected as RDS hosts, disconnects can still occur if acting as RDP clients and connecting to older servers. Redmond says the fix will roll out to impacted Windows Server 2025 devices in a future Windows update. On impacted PCs, users might face RDP disconnections lasting up to 65 seconds when establishing UDP connections from Windows 11 24H2 PCs to RDS hosts on Windows Server 2016 systems.
