T-Mobile Hacked Again: 37 Million Customers Data Stolen

Security experts have sounded alarm bells again as the news surfaced that T-Mobile was hacked once again. This time, the personal data of around 37 million customers have been stolen by hackers. According to reports, the hackers accessed T-Mobile’s servers through an API (Application Programming Interface), a source often used by third-party developers. The breach is said to have gone live on August 20, 2020, with the hackers stealing customers’ personal data such as names, email addresses, date of birth, billing zip codes, phone numbers, account numbers, and more. It is also revealed that 19 million customers were affected in the attack. T-Mobile is yet to provide any further details regarding the breach, such as the type of attack used, the extent of the data theft, etc. This is causing the security experts to weigh the severity of the situation. For now, the company says that no financial data was stolen during the hacking attack, which is a significant relief. This is not the first time T-Mobile has experienced a breach. It has earlier been hacked as many as three times in the past three years. This fact is worryingly disappointing as customers’ trust in the company will keep diminishing unless proper steps are taken by the management to prevent future similar attacks. Such security breaches also raise questions about the cybersecurity protocols of the companies and how safe are the customers’ data. Considering how much of our personal data is stored in servers of third-party companies, it is important that such companies focus on providing robust security to their customers’ data. Customers should also be vigilant and regularly update the security protocols of their accounts. Also, they should never disclose their personal details to any third-party without being sure of its authenticity. Such cases open our eyes to the concerning issues regarding data privacy and security, and the need to take a set of preventive measures to stay secure in the digital world.
