Caxxii, an affiliate of the hacktivist group Anonymous, has released a large amount of data that reveals the Russian government's illegal surveillance tactics to spy on its citizens. The 128 gigabytes of data was taken from Convex, a leading Russian internet provider, and shows the Kremlin's alleged unauthorized wiretapping, espionage, and warrantless surveillance of civilians, which is against the country's laws. In 2015, the European Court of Human Rights warned that the laws governing the country's System for Operative Investigative Activities surveillance system did not provide enough protection against abuse of any secret surveillance system. The Yarovaya Law was passed in 2016, which allowed authorities to obtain communication information without needing a court order. The data also contains records of thousands of Russian citizens who were customers of Russian corporations targeted by this program. Anonymous claims that the data provides evidence of the extent to which the Russian government abuses its legal structures, as Convex virtually captured the entire data. The hacktivist group also stated that they had more unreleased information on FSBs intelligence-collecting activities. The data was made available on the official website of DDoSecrets. Anonymous has been responsible for several cyber and social engineering attacks against the Russian government and the private sector, such as hacking the Yandex taxi app, Payment processor Qiwi, Ministry of Culture, State-Run Broadcaster, Central Bank of Russia, unsecured printers, security cameras, media censoring agency Roskomnadzor, 90% of Russian misconfigured databases, TV transmissions, Electric vehicle charging station and more. This has caused the Ukraine-Russia conflict to reach a new level.
