A hacker associated with the ShinyHunters group, identified as Paul Gubarev, has pleaded not guilty to data theft charges as pleaded in a recent court hearing. The hacker is accused of stealing over 500 million sensitive information belonging to corporations into the black market. The hacker was indicted in May by the U.S. Justice Department’s Northern District of California. The indictment notice stated that Gubarev was involved in exploiting vulnerabilities in software and using stolen credentials to gain entry into networks of entities in the U.S. and around the world. Gubarev’s alleged theft included data related to millions of usernames, passwords, addresses, dates of birth, personal identifying information and other sensitive information. During the hearing, Gubarev not guilty to all the charges mentioned in the indictment. Gubarev has been granted permission to remain in Russia during the trial, which is set to begin in September this year.
The hack by ShinyHunters was the largest data breach the FBI had encountered since the cyber-onion. The case is seen as a milestone in the fight against cybercrime and one of the biggest criminal cases involving digital theft. The FBI and the U.S. Justice Department have vowed to take all possible steps to bring Gubarev and other hackers involved in ShinyHunters to justice.
